Bulgaria's second highest range, the mountains are Incredibly rich in wildlife, flora and fauna, whilst the valleys of the Struma and Mesta rivers ensure that the summer months are warm with the highest number of sunny days of any mountain area in the country. Pure water tarns and wildflowers abound in the highland valleys and the unique ecosystem is home to a number of rare plant species such as the Edelweiss.
The mountains are easily accessible between May and October with the best of the weather falling during July and August when temperatures are high with little rain. There is a narrow gauge mountain railway that runs from Velingrad to Septemvri giving stunning views of the mountains and passing through the highest railway station in the Balkans.
The area offers a huge range of outdoor pursuits during the summer months including: Walking, hiking and trekking, climbing, horse riding, fishing, swimming and cycling.
